4D art

For my portfolio, I've decided to make a "zine." The criteria for what constitutes a zine are really ambiguous, so I hope this is the kind of thing you were looking for :) Each image would be a page in the zine

Ideation: My process for creating this project stemmed from a period of brainstorming, and then simply seeing a hammer hanging from a hook on the wall. From there, everything else just sort of conceptually fell into place. It did take a bit longer for me to decide that the audio aspect was necessary, but that actually turned out to be one of the most important aspects of my piece. In short, my ideation started from a physical object and progressed due to a series of conceptual associations.  Self Critique: I think this project was definitely successful, as it met my personal aesthetic, emotional, and conceptual goals. It seemed to have the effect that I intended based on the comments of my classmates, so I really don't have much in the way of criticism. One thing did go wrong, however, with the audio, but I fixed that pretty much immediately. Also, I could've probably been more confident when presenting it, and made my intentions more clear.

Ideation: What is it? An object that uses water to mimic music, including rhythm, tone, variations in volume.  How does it work? Water droplets fall from the top reservoir into the lower ones. I think I’ll use Tupperware probably What does it represent? I want to combine ambiance with musical expression, moving something common into somewhere “sacred” (like the gallery, or the room where we saw the performance presentations.) It’s also something mechanical, removing the expression of the artist completely. In other words, I’m giving life to something inanimate. that sounds so pretentious lol, I feel like a true artist now 🤣🤣🤣 Similar to minimalist music, I'm using repetition to take a single moment of sound and sort of "zoom in", and this sound changes and edits over time. You can hear the droplets hitting the water, which is layered upon the boxes vibrating against each other, which is layered upon the different frequencies emitted by the separate box...

What other omnipresent yet unnoticed thingssurround our community? How can sense of smell be incorporated into art. It's already being used in virtual reality, how else?

Laurel: That New New ❤️ Improvement: It seems like your old boots have taken on a lot of symbolism for you, being that you kept them for so long, saying "they fit so well," and the concept of symbolism is very clear in the piece. I do wish that you had fleshed out how objects take on symbolism more, and maybe you could've also explored the idea of something being personal (in your very personal connection with your old shoes, and the personal connections with all the ones in the thrift shop). Lejay: Day Interpretation: You seem to have played with the nature of reality and the way it relates to art. I think the artist "sees" things in a different light way, represented by the drawn landscape. I'm not quite sure about the symbol of the birds, but I tend to think they're somehow related to the freedom of an artist's different view of reality. "Natural" The video won't load into blogger, so here's a YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zafc0cVqIFA I definitely feel that my project was a success as I was able to illustrate the idea of something "natural" becoming something "unnatural" in a humorous way. For the project, I: "deconstructed" a flower, "arranged" it onto cling wrap, "transmuted" it into paper, and then placed it in my vase. I did run into some problems with keeping the camera still between shots as well as keeping the "set" consistent, but I was able to deal with those by adding cuts in the editing process. It was also difficult because I knew that for a lot of these shots I could only do one take: if I messed it up I'd have to start over completely.

It seems like the incorporation of time in art has a connection to music. Is the merging of music and visual art through videos and other media contributing to art's incorporation of "time and motion?" Time and motion have been incorporated in artwork for a very long time, and it has always been incorporating more dimensions through which to explore time. How will new technologies and media contribute to this?

       For our project, we decided to do a performance that explores a topic relating to mental health, as this is a really prominent issue in today's society. Specifically, we decided to explore the interplay between anxiety and depression: two illnesses that are common among students. To do this, we have the subject (Jesse) being encircled by the entity of depression (me) and anxiety (kong). Throughout the performance, Jesse's reactions will show the effect of the illnesses on her mental health.        I feel that our project does a really good job of illustrating the idea we had, as the everything from the costumes to the specific actions of each partner is set up to fit in with our goal. Also, this performance could not have been done with less than three people, so we definitely got the most out of all of our resources. Jesse, Kong, and I started with the map to nowhere option, so we wrote directions for each other to follow and then took photos of where we ended up. Next, I felt the textures of the walls around the building/outside. It was actually kinda cool since you don't usually notice those things as you walk around. Next, I did the folding option. I have no idea how to fold a paper crane, so I settled on a paper airplane. Honestly, pretty anticlimactic lol. Did the crying in line thing. I didn't sob because that would be waaay too much, honestly. I just got some concerned looks lol. I noticed all the lines for the booths, and you could sometimes tell what people were waiting for based on what they wore, but I kinda think it might've just been confirmation bias on my part.

does the fact that any single performance cannot be exactly reproduced change the idea of permanence in performance art? How will technology such as virtual reality and augmented reality change the idea of performance art?

We use inanimate objects (phones and computers) to interface with an inanimate world, to connect with inanimate/fake representations of people.      Additionally, this digital world is bleeding into reality in the form of plastic surgery, low self esteem, anxiety, and the inability to express our true opinions in reality. I think that we're getting so involved with our contrived digital worlds that our personalities and experiences are more and more being shaped by them. To be clea...

1. What is the nature of the relationship between are more human "symbolic" acts, and the context of the cold and calculated world of law and government? 2. If artistic works change as thier context changes, what does that say about the lifespan of a piece of art?

Jesse's work “Distorted in Time” uses a combination of image editing and composition in order to illustrate the changing of art over time. She uses color and image composition to create a sense of depth and balance, adding to the aesthetic properties of the work. The images were aligned in two columns, and four rows; from there she alternated images from the renaissance with images from contemporary artists. In this way, she was able to contrast the two time periods. the first row of images, taken from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, is Mi chelangelo's "The Creation of Adam." We can see that on the left, the image is only glitched slightly, while the image on the right is almost completely distorted. This is a perfect example of how time affects art, as images are distorted through changing context and evolving societal values; it also reminds viewers that even the memory of an image is colored by our new experiences and the passage of time. 1. it seems like when postmodern art strives to break outside the studio, and "embrace a wider framework for art production," it's another step along a constantly widening "framework" throughout time. Our influences are constantly multiplying, and our production methods are becoming more diverse as time goes on. Won't this inevitably lead to the word "art" becoming meaningless, as what is called art is so diverse that each piece can't be intuitively categorized with another? 2. to what degree does the artist own their artwork, now that there are so many layers of technology and influence that guides them? Perhaps they even took an image as a starting point and created a variation of it, does the artist own that piece?
