Video Response
Laurel: That New New ❤️
Improvement: It seems like your old boots have taken on a lot of symbolism for you, being that you kept them for so long, saying "they fit so well," and the concept of symbolism is very clear in the piece. I do wish that you had fleshed out how objects take on symbolism more, and maybe you could've also explored the idea of something being personal (in your very personal connection with your old shoes, and the personal connections with all the ones in the thrift shop).
Lejay: Day
Interpretation: You seem to have played with the nature of reality and the way it relates to art. I think the artist "sees" things in a different light way, represented by the drawn landscape. I'm not quite sure about the symbol of the birds, but I tend to think they're somehow related to the freedom of an artist's different view of reality.
Mary: I'll Leave the Light On
Interpretation: This piece was full of emotion, and had great videography overall, especially since you used the house and the light as symbols in the video. I love how the video seems to be slightly disconnected from the narrative, so the symbols are constantly being shown in the video independent of the story.
Jesse: Finally
Improvements: Your video really excelled with conveying emotion through the sound of the object being destroyed, the lighting, and the lack of music. The only thing I would really want to change is just to add more context behind the emotion. I feel like there's an underlying story.
Camille:
Interpretation: I love your choice of music as it adds a sort of meditative mood to the piece. There's also the sound of birds in the background near the beginning, which makes me think this is somehow a comparison between humans and animals. I'm also lead to this conclusion by your movements, which sort of mess with our normal understanding of how we're supposed to act.
Improvements: I feel like your movements were a little shaky in some places, so maybe just taking more time to get every shot perfect. Also, the video dragged on a bit in revealing meaning (at least for me) and could've been shorter.
Abby: Expectations
Improvements: I really felt that the concept behind this was great, and I love how you used the symbols to illustrate it. I do wish that you had taken more time with the actual execution of the process, as the camerawork can be a bit clumsy. Also, I think it would be great to find more examples of expectations that didn't come through, as the symbols were all quite similar.
Kong: New Days
Interpretation: With the context of the word "new", this project takes on a lot of meaning that isn't directly evident in the video. It seems to be a statement about how newness is connected to nature, especially the beginning and the end of the day. You also spent some time on the autumn leaves, which makes me think of the contrast between the newness of spring and the age of fall.
Raul: Same
Interpretations: I think this video is questioning the idea of same-ness, using the two mannequins that are supposedly the same, but actually have slight variations in their movement and makeup. Also, those little mannequins are used by artists to draw figures with the "right" proportions, which also says something about same-ness.
Improvements: I love that you didn't add sound and also used a stop motion technique, it really makes it artistic. I wish it was a bit longer, though, and I think you could've gone farther with the idea of "same" by playing around more with the figures (perhaps deliberately make them different over the course of the video?).
