Glitch art Critique

Jesse's work “Distorted in Time” uses a combination of image editing and composition in order to illustrate the changing of art over time. She uses color and image composition to create a sense of depth and balance, adding to the aesthetic properties of the work.
The images were aligned in two columns, and four rows; from there she alternated images from the renaissance with images from contemporary artists. In this way, she was able to contrast the two time periods. the first row of images, taken from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, is Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam." We can see that on the left, the image is only glitched slightly, while the image on the right is almost completely distorted. This is a perfect example of how time affects art, as images are distorted through changing context and evolving societal values; it also reminds viewers that even the memory of an image is colored by our new experiences and the passage of time.
In the second and fourth columns, Jesse takes the art of contemporary artists and distorts it. This reminds us that even things we consider to be new will eventually be old, and therefore it’s meaning will be “glitched” over the passage of time.

vLastly, viewers should consider the fact that Jesse specifically chose works from the renaissance to contrast them with contemporary art. This is important, because the renaissance was a time of reconstruction and strong ideals, while the contemporary “postmodern” works are typified by seemingly nonsensical themes and a deconstructive critique of culture.
